This past summer, I had the pleasure of doing a family photo session with the Schmalz family just north of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The weather was perfect—warm but not too hot—and the golden field grass was glowing under the late summer sun. In the distance, the mountains added that extra touch of beauty that made this location an absolute dream for a family photo session.
This wasn’t my first time photographing the Schmalz family. It was actually our second year working together, and it was so fun to see how everyone’s personalities have evolved. We were able to take a more laid-back approach this time around, which allowed for some real, raw moments to shine through. There’s something so special about getting to know a family year after year and capturing their unique connection each time.
Of course, no family photo shoot is complete without a little bit of unexpected drama! As we were shooting, we had the craziest encounter with a neighbor, and then—just to keep things interesting—one of the kids got stung by a bee! And, as someone who was seven months pregnant at the time, I may not have been as spry as I once was, but I was definitely there for the laughs and the good vibes.
Despite the little hiccups, the session was filled with beauty. It’s memories like these that remind me why I love my job—getting to witness families grow and capturing their moments is such a rewarding experience. I’m also really excited about something special coming up: Gracie’s senior photos! I can’t wait to work with the family again and help her celebrate this milestone.
Until next time, Schmalz family! Here’s to more family photo sessions near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. I look forward to finding out what crazy adventures are in store!
